Balie’s Gat Campsite, Op-Die-Berg, Western Cape

Baliesgat is a gem of a campsite in the southern Cederberg area. The farm has a long history and one of the original owners’ great grandchildren still farm here. They farm mainly with fruit and a flock of Dorper sheep. The road to the camp runs through the farm Tandfontein. Then it winds down in the valley. It took the farmers many years to build an ox-wagon track down into the valley. After it was widened, it was opened to the public and is now called the Piet Esterhuysen Road. It is quite an interesting drive. The road can only accommodate a car in one direction at any time, therefor there is lookout points where you must stop and make sure that there is not another car coming in the opposite direction. The views are breath takingly beautiful as one makes you way slowly down into the valley.

The camp looks like an oasis from the top. You will need a high clearance vehicle and, if you tow a trailer, a 4x4.

The campsites are on green grass. Each of the four campsites has a braai area, tap with drinking water, gazebo for shade and a dishwashing area. Another bonus is private ablutions. It is spacious, modern and clean.

You can buy firewood and home-made produce from the basic shop. Do note there is NO CELLPHONE reception and no electricity. Bliss. Remember to pack your solar panels though.

The play area will keep the kids busy and the river running along the camp is relaxing. You can do trail running, mountain biking and hiking. Do go have a look at the rock paintings. It can be very hot in summertime and then one can cool off in one of the rock pools. You can also try your hand at fishing.

This is a great spot if you want to get away from the hussle and bussle of the city. The views of the rock formation are amazing.
