Kubu Island Campsite, Sua Pan, Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Kubu Island is located on the majestic Sua pan that forms part of the Makgadikgadi Pans area in the central region of Botswana. This truly is a special place to visit and reconnect with nature. The campsite is totally off grid and just getting to the campsite itself is a challenge. All the tracks leading to the campsite are 4x4 tracks and in summer time when it is the rain season these pans become mud baths. I would not recommend visiting in the wet season unless you really know the area and you are a very experienced 4x4 driver. The camp has no water or shower facilities at the campsite so everything you need to survive you will have to bring along with you. You can buy firewood at the gate as you enter. There are a few long drop toilets scattered around the camp terrain, however they are not in the best condition so if you have a porta loo you can take that along.

Kubu Island used to be an island in the lake Makgadikgadi but as the lake evaporated the salt pans started to form and islands, such as Kubu, are now totally surrounded by these vast salt pans. The Makgadikgadi Pans covers around 16 000 square kilometres and consists of 3 main pan areas with Sua pan being the biggest one. Kubu Island is still considered to be a sacred place for the indigenous people and on the island you can still find some historical ruins. You can explore the island by foot and see some of the giant baobab trees that can be found on the island all while having some spectacular views of the pan itself. Exploring the pan area is a great experience. You really get a feel of the vastness and emptiness of the pans. This really is one of my favourite places to visit and could recommend it highly. Just be sure to do the necessary preparation and take enough supplies and fuel with you as this is a remote area. Watch the video below for our full review on Kubu Island.
