Kleinfontein Campsite, Clanwilliam, Western Cape

Kleinfontein is a campsite in the northern part of the Cederberg Mountains at the foot of the Pakhuis Pass. This is a beautiful part of the Cederberg. The star of the show is the amazing sandstone rock formations. But in spring the landscape transforms into a spectacle of green and colour when the flowers bloom. Kleinfontein is well known for the Witkruis arend or Black Eagle. You may also see other game like leopard, hyrax, klipspringer, duiker and aardvark. Kleinfontein offers camping and self-catering accommodation.

We loved the campsites. There are different sizes campsites. Some will be suitable for one tent and others can take trailers and more tents. The campsites are surrounded by the mountain and sandstone rock formations. Each campsite has a build in braai. Firewood can be bought from the management. It can be very cold in winter time and Kleinfontein offers an indoor braai area complete with a zinc and table and chairs. This is ideal if the weather is less ideal or if you rent the entire campsite  for a bigger group or family gathering.

The ablution facilities gives a rustic feel but is spotless and modern. There are hot water showers and flush toilets.

Kleinfontein is ideal for rock climbing and bouldering. You can explore the caves and look for rock art. The property has five notable bouldering locations including “Sky” and “Hatchling”. Do note that you need to obtain a permit from Kliphuis Campsite office, or Clanwilliam Information Centre to do bouldering. You can also do mountain biking and the clear night sky is ideal for star gazing.

The surrounding area is famous for Rooibos Tea. Visit the factory in Clanwilliam. Down the road is the well known Travelers Rest restaurant. Always a good stop for lunch and souvenirs or basic stuff.

We loved every moment that we spend there. The owner made us feel at home and very welcome.
